‘Semi Pro’ is laugh aloud funny which is a real test of comedy. (If they do not laugh it is not funny.) Jackie Moon (Ferrell) is a singer who uses the profits from his one hit single "Love Me Sexy", to buy a basketball team in the American Basketball Association, the ‘Flint Tropics’, becoming the owner, head coach, and starting Power Forward.
The year is 1976 when the NBA merged with the ABA with only four teams being eligible to join from the ABA. The Tropics are the worst team in the Association and therefore must improve to join the new NBA.
The promotional ploys that Jackie uses to highlight the game become progressively more funny and ludicrous. The bear he wrestles at one stage becomes a running gag through the rest of the film. He attempts an Evel-Knieval style jump on roller skates even though he has never used roller skates before. The gags are clever with frequent comic references to their inner turmoil as Jackie and his team work their way through the uncertainties of the time.
The movie, directed by Kent Alterman and written by Scot Armstrong, is one of the funniest films from Will Ferrell. The M rating is for frequent sexual references and bad language.
